Jennifer Hencken is an educator with almost 20 years of experience in a variety of subject areas and as a Reading Specialist. She started her career in public school at Conway Middle School where she stayed for twelve years. While there, Jennifer taught math and science in the sixth grade. After obtaining her Reading Specialist certification, she began teaching intensive reading to low achieving students in sixth through eighth grade.
After 12 years in the public school system, Jen took her varied experience to Trinity Preparatory School, an independent school, where she currently works with middle school students by providing them with academic support. She is a school mom, task-master, organizer, and study skills guru to students of all abilities. More importantly, she is a motivator and advocate for students in her role as a liaison between the school and home.
To expand her leadership role at Trinity Preparatory School, she is currently able to help teachers as the professional development coordinator. In this role, she not only organizes professional development opportunities for teachers, she presents at in-house workshops, and meets with teachers one-on-one or in small groups to help them redesign their lessons in order to increase learning for the students. She has re-energized the new faculty mentor program. She has brought collaboration and a sense of community to the forefront for faculty and staff with monthly TPS Connects activities. She is constantly learning through her own PLN and sharing that knowledge to anyone who will listen. In a new role this year, she is creating a professional learning library of sources from inside her organization in order to cultivate a culture of collaborative learning. As the director of external professional development she is also knocking down doors and walls to expand professional learning outside of her school by bringing in guest speakers, helping co-create an independent school learning cohort, and hosting a regional conference in the spring.
Jen is a Google Certified Educator and a Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator. She is also a Buncee Ambassador and a Remind Connected Educator. As a presenter, she has taken her passion for professional development on the road to national conferences like the Lausanne Learning Institute, International Literacy Association National Conference, Superior Tech 4 Teachers, Miami Device, FETC, and AMLE.
